About chimney flue liners
If you have a chimney, you’ve most likely been told to install yourself a flue liner in your home to conserve energy. Even though is not something that the Victorian would ever have used this device is a must in some states and others command the way that it is installed and used. It is most likely that your chimney already has a flue liner installed as most homes are constructed with one already.rclma
It is usually installed from above into the chimney and it’s used as an insulator to stop the cold air from flowing down the chimney, acting like an energy conserving device. The types of flue liner range from the old style clay lining, poorly installed to the modern metal or fabric versions. How old your building is ,it’s price and whether you have a gas fire or a wood stove determines what kind of flue liner you got. On the market there are usually three main type of liner. A rubber tube the shape of a balloon is hurled inside the chimney and then inflated is called the Refractory lining. Using a stone mix to fasten the tubing the Refractory lining is fixed into place. If there is heat and toxic gases, metal liners are used in gas or stoves that require wood to burn. These are dropped down the chimney and the gaps are sealed with stone mixes. The last one,the solid liner is made of concrete and does not allow water to flow into the flue but should only be used if the stack can be shown to be straight or if it is being rebuilt.
Flue liner function
As most lining in chimneys is old they are more likely to emit smoke in the room when the fire is lit so a flue liner is used to protect you from it. Soot formed on the bricks and the corrosion of the motor is caused by the heat on old chimneys so a flue liner is used to enhance the state of the brick and to make sure that the air flows up and into the air, not into the room where it can be harmful for humans. The lining acts as an insulator for the chimney because during cold weather most of the heat goes through the chimney but this way it is forced into the room. Furthermore, using a flue liner, the water will not condense on the chimney, harming the bricks or even roof the tiles .If you are using a more efficient heating system along with an old brick chimney it is mandatory that you have a liner.
