Chimney fire prevention tips

A chimney fire can do some serious damage. These fires mostly occur because of lack of maintenance. There are a few simple things you can do to avoid a fire altogether.

Cleaning and inspection

A damaged chimney can help spread the fire to the rest of the house and a dirty chimney, that has creosote and soot buildups will increase the chance of a fire and will increase the damage it can deal. Cleaning and inspecting the chimney annually will significantly reduce the chance of a chimney fire.

Small fires

If you start a small fire, less creosote is produced. A smaller fire is also a lot easier to control and safer.

Seasoned wood

Use dried, seasoned wood. Wet wood will burn much slower and make more smoke which will result in a higher creosote level. Wood seasoned for 6 months or more is ideal.

No paper or flammable liquids

You mustn’t throw paper, garbage, plants or other such things in the fireplace. These objects can ignite, float upwards and ignite the creosote buildups, causing a chimney fire.

Chimney liner

The chimney liner offers an escape route for toxic gases and fumes. This helps keep the chimney cleaner, easier.

Chimney cap

The chimney cap will keep small animals away from the chimney, preventing their entrance. The cap also keeps leaves and twigs from entering the chimney and igniting the whole thing.

Air supply

A proper air supply means less creosote buildups. Make sure to leave the fireplace damper open. This is available for the fireplace doors too.
