Garage Door Spring Replacing
The springs of the garage door power the movement of the door and if faulty or damaged they should be replaced immediately to avoid possible accidents. Replacing them is a bit risky as they are under permanent tension, tension which affects the other components as well.
You should know there are two types of garage door springs and they are used in both manually and electronically handled doors.rclma
Torsion springs are generally used for sectional roll-away doors. They work on the principle of “twisting” and are placed above the center of the door, on a metal shaft parallel to the edges. The springs twist and the cables attached to them lift the door. Torsion springs are harder to replace than extension springs.
Extension springs are long and heavy springs placed on the top rim of the door, along the edges of the door, and they use the principle of “stretching”.
If the garage door and floor are not leveled the door will not close properly. In time, the springs will start to lose efficiency because of usage. Even if one spring breaks you will need to replace both to avoid having an imbalanced door.
Incorrectly adjusted garage door springs can lead to accidents, increased or decreased tension in the spring can also affect the door mechanism and loose springs cause imbalances.
For preventing irregularities in the mechanism, make a habit out of checking the whole system once a month.
Assemble all the accessories and tools you might need, always refer to the user’s manual before doing any replacing or repairing and make sure to follow the instructions and precautions. If you do not know much about the system call a professional, as any mistake can lead to an accident. Proceed with uttermost precaution.
