Irrigation system - Past and present

Irrigation systems have gone a long way since the former nomadic tribes and until today. They have always been a crucial factor in the growth and development of the agricultural industry.

Early times

The first form of irrigation appeared around 5000 years ago and consisted of trenches dug in the fields and flooded with water that was brought by hand or bucket.rclma

In Egypt and Mesopotamia

About 4000 years ago, the Egyptians and the people of Mesopotamia, used a passive form of irrigation, totally depending on the annual flooding of a river. The Egyptians used the river Nile as their water source and made individual basins of crops that would come in contact with the flooding water.

In Asia

About 2000 years ago, China used traditional surface irrigation methods and went to a whole new level of irrigation, building canals to acquire water from far away. The city which is now Cambodia, has had a complex system of canals, ponds and reservoirs used for irrigation and storage of water since the 9th and 14th century.

In Europe

The Romans had built complex irrigation systems over 2000 years ago. Some canals transported water from the mountains and deposited it in reservoirs. Local river water irrigation systems have been also discovered.

Modern day irrigation systems

Once with the modern era, steam and electrically powered pumps, draw water out of rivers and use it to irrigate the lands. Drip irrigation systems are nowadays the most effective and efficient of all. Also, spraying systems that use as much water as needed are the top systems used.
