Backyard drainage materials

Rain water is one of the main causes for basement leakages and home water damage. If your yard and driveway do not have a good drainage system, then it’s best that you consider installing one. Here’s how you can improve the exterior drainage system:

  1. First of all you will need to determine the areas with problems.
Low spots are usually the most prone to water pooling. After this, plan the route of the drainage system.
  2. Now you will need to make some preparations. You will need to go to your local authorities and find out if there are any underground pipe or phone lines in your backyard, so you can dig without problems. Also buy the needed materials for the job.
  3. Now it’s time to dig the holes and the trench. You will need to dig a near your downspouts to make a way for the water to drain in the main trench. Make sure that every part of the trench that you dig is on a slope.
  4. After you have dug all the trenches, it’s time to lay the pipes. Take the PVC pipes and connect them to the down spouts. Use PVC cement to connect the pipe sections and connector to the downspouts. Connect all the pipes.
  5. After you have finished connecting the pipes, you will need to run some tests. Put some water in the system and see if there are any leaks. If there aren’t any, then you can start covering the pipes. Use gravel and clay to set it around the pipes and then use loose soil to cover the pipes.

Tips

  • to increase water flow from downspouts to the pipes, use 45 degree PVC elbows.
  • you can reuse the grass by removing it with a flat head shovel.
  • think where you will redirect the water from the pipes. You can use sewers or you can use a lake, pool, etc.
