Chimney cap maintenance

When installing chimney surrounds for your chimney you will need the right tools and instructions.

Measuring

Measure the height and width of the chimney pipe and the pitch of the roof. You can also purchase chimney surround extensions for high chimney pipes.

To install the chimney surround, you need to cut its panels so that they fit the installation.

Bending

Drill screws into a wooden board a certain distance away from the edge to build a bending jig. Secure the board in a vise that is on a workbench. Bend the flashing using the producer’s instructions.

Cutting surrounds to roof

The surround must match the roof’s pitch. If it doesn’t, cut it and adjust it to the proper size. You will need heavy metal shears to cut through 22 gauge steel surrounds. To fit the height of the chimney pipe, cut panels at the other end.

Cutting cap to pipe

Cut a hole in the center of the cap that comes with the chimney surround. The hole must have the same diameter as the chimney pipe. The cap will slide over the pipe once you attach it to the side panels using the mounting brackets.

Sealing brackets and nails

Using roofing tar, seal the strips of flashing before securing them into place with nails. Any gap in the roof made by mounting bracket screws must be sealed and covered with tar.

Lay the surround

Screw or bolt the mounting brackets into the roof frame around the chimney pipe. Place the surround panels on the outside edges of the mounting brackets.Follow the producer’s instructions if you are not sure about your skills.

Reinstall chimney cap

Slide any existing spark-arrest or draft inducer onto the chimney cap above the surround panels. Be sure to leave space for the cap while you work on the project.
