Chimney cap type
A chimney cap is installed in order to protect the chimney and flue liner. You must find out the right measurements for the chimney cap before purchasing anything.
Proper cap
Caps can be made of copper, stainless steel, steel or aluminum.
Installation method
Depending on your chimney type, the cap has different methods of installation. For metal chimneys, you have to purchase a right sized cap that will slide on the chimney top and must be tightened in place using pressure screws. If you have more flues, make sure the cap is at least 5 inches higher than the tallest flue. In the case of round flue tiles, you will be able to install the cap just by pushing it into place and caulking the joint with silicon sealant.
Installation process
Read the producer’s instructions. There you will find out if you need adhesive or screws to install the cap on the chimney. Use 1/4 inch diameter screws that are 1 1/2 inches to 1 3/4 inches long. They must be at least 12 inches apart.
