Chimney cap

The chimney cap is used to keep debris or water from entering the chimney flue. It is more than recommended to install a chimney cap because it can save you money and prevent dangers like fires caused by debris in the chimney flue. Caps come in many types of metal: galvanized steel, copper, stainless steel and aluminum.

Painting the cap to match the color of the house is easy. You have to follow some simple steps.

Metal type matters

The type of metal the cap is made of is important when deciding whether or not to paint the cap after all. Most people paint the cap only if it is made of galvanized steel to protect it from rust. Keep in mind that stainless steel doesn’t rust and that copper can tarnish. You decide whether or not you want to paint the cap, regardless of the type of metal it’s made of.

Cap inspection

You have to inspect the metal cap before painting it and see if there are any signs of rust. Any rust can be removed using steel wool. Depending on how badly rusted the cap is, the time it takes to remove the rust will vary. If the metal is already being eaten away by rust, you won’t be able to fix it and must buy a new one.

Paint type

You have a wide range of paint types you can use: latex, oil, flats, enamels, satin or gloss paint. Also, there are even more colors to choose from. Regardless of what paint type and color you choose, the paint must contain an anti-rust agent and must resist high temperatures of up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

Brush or spray paint

Choosing how to apply the paint is left entirely at your decision. You can either use a brush and cover up the cap nicely, but with the risk of paint dripping, or spray paint the cap, assuring you that the cap is evenly coated and the paint won’t drip. Spray painting however must be done carefully, not to cover anything else like the roof shingles.
