Chimney efficiency

A metal chimney cap is important because it acts like a small roof for the chimney top. Regardless of the material the chimney cap is made of, it is still possible for weather factors to damage it, denting or cracking it. The repairing process is in most cases easy and doesn’t require a professional’s hand.

Tools and Materials

  • A pair of pliers
  • A hammer
  • Replacement metal caps
  • Screwdriver

Fixing dents

A dent cap is the most common problem you may encounter with a chimney cap. You just have to use a pair of pliers to manually straighten the cap.

Chimney recapping

Sometimes, the chimney cap can be so dent that it becomes impossible to repair. Recapping it with a new layer of metal over the old one will fix the problem. Using the measurements of the old metal cap, purchase an identical one and place it over the old cap using metal adhesive.

Tighten the screws

The screws that hold the chimney cap into place may have loosened. This issue is simple to fix. All you need is a screwdriver and hammer, to position the screws into place.

Don’t forget that maintaining a chimney cap also means cleaning it and removing any debris that might have deposited on and under it.
