Chimney flue maintenance

It is very important to clean out a chimney, especially if it is blocked.  Soot and creosote, produced when burning fuel in the fireplace, can build-up in the chimney and block it, increasing the risk of a fire hazard. Also, these byproducts are known to have carcinogenic effects.

Tools and materials needed

  • Cleaning brushes
  • Bucket
  • Ladder
  • Bungee Cord
  • Goggles or other Eye Wear
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves
  • Vacuum
  • Broom
  • Sheets or drop cloth

Get a ladder

Of course, first of all you have to get a ladder and put it against the house. The ladder must be long enough to get you to the rooftop. While you climb, it is best to have somebody at the base of the ladder to hold it from moving.

Get on the rooftop

When you reach the roof, carefully get off the ladder and get onto the roof. Go to the area where the chimney top and cap are.

Chimney cap cleaning

Safety is important, so before you start cleaning the cap, put on gloves, eye goggles and a mask. Take the chimney cap off and scrub it using a soft brush. Be sure to clean the inner part of the cap. After you are done cleaning the cap, put it in a bucket and using a bungee cord, tie it and secure it around the chimney.

Chimney top inspection

Check the top of the chimney for any debris that might be there. Using a brush, either push them down the chimney or pull them out. Put them into the bucket.

Reinstall the cap

Place the chimney cap back onto the chimney and properly secure it into place. Get off the ladder and go into the house.

Covering the room

Using drop cloths, cover the room where the fireplace is, to avoid getting everything dirty of soot.

Chimney inner inspection

Using a flashlight, inspect the chimney of any additional blockages, if there are any left. You have to stand directly under the chimney to do this.

Chimney brushing

Using a long brush, clean the chimney and remove the debris that block it. Rub the brush on all the chimney walls. Clean the fireplace and the room and get rid of the debris that have fallen. If you wish to completely clean the chimney, hire a professional to do it.
