Chimney metal cap
Installing a flue cap will increase the lifespan of a chimney and improve its efficiency. It can be installed either when the chimney is built, or any other time. The task of installing a flue cap is easy and can be surely done without professional help.
Tools and materials
- Flue cap
- Caulking gun
- Adhesive
- Chalk
- Putty knife
- Protective gloves
- Soft rag
- Ladder
Get on the roof
Using a ladder carefully get on top of the roof and take all you necessary equipment with you.
Fit the cap
Carefully place the cap into position on the chimney crown. Adjust it’s position and angle until it is properly arranged.
Conform the flange
The flange must be bent around the flue cap base so that it will fallĀ in line with the chimney crown.
Mark the flange
Hold the flue cap into position and using chalk, circle the flange.
Apply adhesive
Lay down a zigzag layer of adhesive on the inner area of the circle you have drawn. It’s best you apply the adhesive in a zigzag pattern.
Attach flange
Carefully secure the flange into the adhesive, properly aligning it. The fit must be perfect to obtain the best results.
Adhesive smoothing
Use a putty knife to evenly smooth the layer of adhesive. Any excess adhesive must be removed with a soft rag.
Let it dry
It is very important to use the fireplace only after the adhesive has completely dried
Tips
- There must be an optimum amount of space between the flue liner and cap bottom. Not having the right amount of space will forbid the gasses from flowing as they should.
- Before buying a flue cap, measure the dimensions of the chimney flue.
- In case you need any help, while you are on the roof, it is best to have someone on the ground that can aid you.
