Chimney pipe fitting

An insulated chimney pipe is used mainly in homes that have wood, oil, coal or gas fueled appliances. This also applies for homeowners with a wood stove. The pipe can withstand very high temperatures, because it must take all the heat coming from any appliance and release it outside.

Tools and materials needed

  • Insulated chimney pipe
  • Homeowner’s manual
  • Framing lumber
  • Ceiling support
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Single or double wall connection pipe
  • Metal screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Nuts
  • Wrench
  • Ceiling trim plate

Dimensions

You must find out the exact dimensions and location of the chimney so you can later determine the diameter of the chimney flue. This information can either be found in the homeowners manual or at the chimney manufacturer. After finding out this information, you can choose the right sized chimney pipe.

Framing lumber

You must inspect and determine if the framing lumber is precisely the same size as the ceiling joist. The framing lumber opening must have enough space from the chimney to the combustibles. This means about 1 and a half inch clearance for 6-8 inches diameter and 2 inches clearance for 10-18 inches diameter.

Connector pipe installation

Regardless if the chimney of the stove you are using passes through the ceiling or passes through the floor and then the ceiling, you will need to insert the insulated pipe through this distance. A ceiling support must be mounted, through which the pipe will pass.

Chimney pipe installation

Before placing the chimney pipe through the ceiling supports, you will have to slide a trim sleeve join over the pipe. You must connect an adapter to the right end of the pipe and a flush to the other end. Place the chimney pipe through the ceiling supports. Using metal screws, secure a support band around the pipe, careful not to make holes in the flue. Be sure to tighten any loose nuts on the pipe.

Interior trim

Using an interior trim plate for the ceiling slope, secure it over the ceiling.

Chimney extensions

If the insulated chimney pipe will pass through the fireplace and up the chimney, be sure to place the pipe in a bed of mortar and secure it using an anchor plate with bolts. In this case, you must wrap the chimney liner in ceramic insulation before you begin this task. The cap must be placed at the end of the pipe and the V-band around the flanges.
