Chimney relining

The flexible flue chimney liner is not a proper primary liner and should be used only when relining a chimney that has curves and bends. This liner is usually made out of stainless steel.

Insulation

Proper insulation is very important.

To find out how much insulation you will need you must multiply the diameter of a round flue by 3.14. For rectangular or any other shaped flue, you will need to measure each side. Add one inch to the total calculation. This number represents the minimum insulation you will need. Buying extra insulation is a good idea in case of any mistakes.

Safety issues

Safety is very important when installing a flue liner. You will need protective gloves to keep you safe from any rough edges and also, you will need to wear goggles because you will be cutting the liner. A safety harness is recommended when working on the roof. Having someone to assist you with the ladder and other minor helping tasks is a good idea.

Guiding the liner down

You can either lower the liner down the chimney from the top attaching a rope to the bottom of the liner and having someone guide it down from the bottom of the chimney or lower the liner attaching a weight to the liner bottom. Be careful not to damage the liner in the process.

Type and size

Choosing the right type and size of the liner is very important to assure a proper functioning chimney. If the liner isn’t the right type or size, this may lead to toxic smoke buildup. Asking a professional for advice is cheap and the best solution.
