Chimney saddle

To protect your chimney from moisture, a chimney flashing must be installed. The chimney flashing is located between the shingles and the chimney and prevents water from leaking inside and damaging the chimney. The flashing must be installed along the saddle of the chimney.

The saddle is a sloping structure on one side of the chimney that helps water to runoff. The task is relatively easy if you have the right tools, materials and knowledge.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Chimney flashing
  • Chimney saddle
  • Silicone sealant
  • Roofing nails
  • Brick nails
  • Expanding nail caps
  • Metal shears
  • Circular saw
  • Safety wear

First flashing section

The flashing will be bent as needed. Using metal shears, cut the flashing used for the front part of the chimney. The top ends should be cut at a 45 degrees angle. Bend the corners of the flashing and then secure them to the chimney using galvanized roofing nails. The front of the flashing should also be reinforced with more nails.

Other flashing sections

The other 8 inch square sections of the flashing must be installed along the corners of the chimney. Silicone sealant must be used to fill out the gaps in the corners. After that, nail the flashing to secure it in place. This process must be repeated several times to install the whole flashing around the chimney. Make sure to secure the other sections with nails and seal them.

Chimney saddle installation

Usually installed in the back of the chimney, the saddle will help drain water off the chimney area more effectively. The metal flashing must be built around the base of the saddle. Use galvanized nails to secure the saddle in place.

Flashing cap

Use a circular saw or a grinder to gouge a 1 inch deep groove in the mortar of the chimney where the top flashing will be. Cut the chimney cap flashing, place it at the front of the chimney and bend it around the chimney corners. Use nails to secure the cap into place. Repeat the process for the other sections of the flashing cap. Each section must overlap the previous by 2 inches.

Sealant

Seal and waterproof the grooves you made using silicone caulk.
