Custom chimney pipe

A chimney pipe helps get rid of smoke coming from a stove or fireplace. The pipe must be build properly in order to be as effective as possible.

Tools and materials needed:

  • Chimney pipes
  • Screwdriver
  • Joints or Elbows
  • Stainless steel liner
  • Stainless steel screws
  • Silicone caulk

Preparations

Move the wood stove away from the wall.

At least 8 inches away, but up to 36. This depends on the producer’s instructions. Approximate the path you need to go through from the stove to the exhaust opening. This must be done before buying any pipe.

Lay down the pipes

Work your way downwards from the exhaust hole. Put some caulk into the hole and then push the primary pipe in the exhaust. Build your way down using straight and flex pipes. Make sure there are as few bends in the chimney pipe as possible. Buy as many joint and elbow pipes as necessary.

Build the pipes

Put the clean-out pipe in the exhaust hole after you applied some caulk. This way the mortar will assure a smoke-proof seal. Using stainless steel screws and silicone caulk secure the joints and make sure it is placed at the bottom of the chimney pipe. The pipe needs to be at least 5 feet long to stick out at the top of the flue, withing the chimney. Make sure the pipe is at least 2-3 feet higher than the roof.

Inspection

Once you’ve finished, call the local fire department and ask them to inspect the system. This must be done because the chimney pipe must match the safety regulations and standards to avoid any problems.
