Digging for drainage system

Installing a garage floor drainage system is a difficult task. You must know what type of construction is allowed in your state: motor oil or anti-freeze which are not environmentally friendly. Plan the entire process to avoid unwelcome surprises.

Tools and materials you will need

  • PVC pipes
  • Connectors
  • Glue
  • PVC epoxy
  • Drill

Choosing the type of drain

The drainage system can be build in two ways. You can raise the level of the garage over the floor. This technique is easier and requires the building of a ramp so that you can enter the garage. The other way is harder and involves lowering the existing floor’s level. You may have to use a power drill. This technique is effective as it will make it easier for you to connect the drains to any existing plumbing or septic tanks.

Preparing the tools and the materials

You will need PVC pipes and connectors, glue or PVC epoxy and a drill to connect the pipes. Cut the pipes to the right length using a saw. Try consulting a professional on what materials and tools you should use. You may want to buy a drainage plan to save time and also effort. You may need to insulate the pipes if you are living in a colder climate as the pipes will otherwise freeze. Don’t forget to take that into consideration.

Preparing and connecting PVC pipes

First you have to pick the PVC pipes, connectors and other stuff you may need and purchase them. Then you must saw the pipes and connect them. The connections should be glued with PVC epoxy and have their gaps filled with plumber thread. Connect the pipes to the plumbing or septic tank. If you need to insulate the pipes, do it before you level the floor. Use concrete epoxy to seal the drain mount against the walls and floor.

Leveling the floor

Before you level the floor, insulate the system if you planed it. Use concrete, PVC epoxy or stucco mixture to fill and level the floor. The project is relatively cheap but hard and time-consuming.
