Drip irrigation system installation

The drip irrigation system is an efficient way of watering your plants reducing water waste and properly fertilizing the plants and flowers. To make your own gravity fed system you will need the following items:

  • 50-gallon drum
  • Inline valve
  • 1″ PVC pipe (12 inches long)
  • PVC straight line connector
  • PVC elbow connector
  • 2 rubber washers
  • 1″ plastic tubing
  • 2 metal hose clamps
  • PVC primer
  • PVC adhesive
  • Hacksaw
  • Drill
  • 1″ drill bit
  • Cinder blocks

Start off by setting the water barrel that will store the water for irrigation on a leveled piece of land. It must be as close to the garden as possible.

Then, you need to build a barrel stand that will raise the barrel a considerable amount off the ground. Use cinder blocks to make this stand. It should be about 4 feet high in order to offer the proper pressure.

Now you must drill a hole in a side of the barrel, about 1 inch in diameter and 2 inches above the stand surface that will fit a PVC pipe. Cut 3 pieces of PVC pipe, 2 and 1/8 inches long. Apply primer to the PVC pieces and to the connector piece interior. Glue the PVC piping to the connector and place a rubber washer on the pipe, then slide it in the barrel. Glue an elbow connector to the pipe and make sure it faces downwards.

Take the second piece of PVC pipe and glue it to the elbow connector. Also, attach a valve to the pipe. Now take the last piece of cut PVC pipe and connect it to the other end of the valve. Connect a tube to the PVC pipe using a pipe clamp. Then, connect the tube to the pipe that will water the garden.
