Weed appearance

Weeds can be identified simply by their distinct appearance.

The poison ivy has a 3 leaf formation. Crabgrass doesn’t grow very big and has stems colored in red. Fern-like leaves give you the clue of a Ragweed. Dandelions can be recognized after their distinct fluffy yellow blooms and white seed heads.

Weed seasons

Weeds can be classified as annual or perennial. Purslane, Spotted spurge, Ragweed, Pigweed, Chickenweed, Dodder, Googsegrass and Bluegrass are annual weeds and spread by seeds whilst Clover, Nutsedge, Bermuda grass, Poison ivy, Nettle and Greebriar are Perennial weeds. Perennial weeds are more aggressive and will do a greater damage to your garden than annual ones.

Weed soil

Different types of soil will likely grow different types of weeds. It’s best you examine the soil to find out what weeds are likely to sprout. Knotweed, moss and spotted spurge will grow in wet and poorly drained soil. Fertile soil is an ideal ground for foxtails, pigweed and chickenweed whilst poor soil is good only for dandelion, thistle, rageweed yarrow, fennel and crabgrass. Sandy soils will most likely allow the sprouting of sheep sorrel and thistle weeds whilst hard soils will allow the thriving of dandelions, plantains, and horse nettles.
