How to make a trench drain

The most common problems for basements is water damage, especially for walk-out basements. These problems could be avoided if the drainage around the house would be designed properly. Here are a few steps on how to stop water from entering a walk-out basement door:

  1. First of all you will need to examine the door of your basement first.
If the frame is damages it cannot create a seal and thus allowing the water to get in the basement. It’s important to have a drainage system or a barrier, but it’s also important to have a working door.
  2. Now look for the water sources. If near the entrance to the basement you have gutters, then make sure these have no leaks, that they are clean and draining the water properly. If the gutters are in goo condition, then the grading or drainage may be improper.
  3. Next, check the grading of the terrain. Use some tennis balls, or any other balls and see which way they roll. This is the easiest way to identify the slope. if the grade is towards the basement door, then this is your problem. This means that you will need o install a drainage system to dispose of the water flow properly.
  4. When installing the drainage system you will need to locate your waste system or house drain. This has to be done in order to link the drainage system to these drains. You will also need to install a sump pump to carry the water to the drain area. If you think you are not able to finish the job, then call a professional. Sometimes, a drainage water problem can be solved by regrading the terrain.
