Installing a wood stove chimney pipe

In order to get rid of toxic gases coming from the wood stove, you need to have a chimney pipe installed. The pipe must be properly installed, to avoid leaks that could lead to fumes coming back into the house instead of exiting it though the chimney. The pipe installation process can be done by just about anyone who follows some simple instructions.

If yo do not think you can do the job, hiring a professional is strongly recommended.

Tools and materials needed

  • Chimney pipe kits
  • Tape measure
  • Saw
  • Screwdriver
  • Caulking
  • Roof mastic

Purchase pipe kit

You can either install a chimney pipe attaching a pipe fitting to the back of the stove, or attaching it to an existing chimney. Purchasing a kit is the easiest way in most cases. It requires roof labor and a few proper tools.

Pipe fitting

You need to cut a hole in the ceiling, called the ceiling bucket. It will be the place where you will fit the chimney pipe. Connect and secure into place the chimney pipe at both ends: the one in the ceiling and the one attached to the stove. Be sure to seal the stove and the pipe.

Open roof

As soon as the pipe is attached to the stove, you can begin raising it up through the ceiling bucket and up through the roof. The pipe must be secured into place every 8 feet it travels upwards. The pipe must stick out 3 feet over the roof and must be 2 feet away from anything bigger than 10 feet that is on your roof.

Finishing touches

Install the vent cap, replace any tiles and apply roofing mastic in the area.  Caulk the area of the roof where the pipe sticks out, both on the inside and outside. Keep the pipe securely into place using screws and nails.
