Irrigation

There are many types of irrigation systems, made to decrease the time and labor you need to spend on watering the lawn. Each system can be customized for certain areas and needs.

Irrigation system history

Irrigation systems have been around since 5000 B.

C. and have been used for the first time by the Egyptians. They used the Nile river as their water source and used a shadoof, which is a wheel that dips water buckets and then dispenses them to their source, as an irrigation system.

Drip irrigation system

A drip irrigation system is the most economical irrigation method. It is used to water plants directly at the root. Flower beds, bushes and individual plants use this irrigation system.

Spray irrigation system

Spray heads are irrigation systems that pop out of the ground and cover a surrounding area of 4-15 feet with a fine mist that is beneficial for plants and trees.

Anti siphon irrigation system

The most common type of irrigation system is the anti siphon system. It covers an area of 15-20 feet with water, spraying at a 360 degrees radius. It can be purchased as a pop-up sprinkler also.

Gear driven irrigation system

Used for large areas of lawns and gardens, the gear driven irrigation system works just like the anti siphon sprinkler system. The differences are that, the gear driven system covers an area of 25-60 feet in diameter and is regulated by changing the pressure of the system.

Irrigation systems advantages

An irrigation system doesn’t only save you a lot of time, it also saves you a lot of money. Such a system allows automatic watering schedules that offer the optimum amount of water needed.

Tips

Make sure you choose the sprinkler head that suits the pressure used by your irrigation system. Also, the area the sprinkler reaches is important, because two or more sprinklers should overlap, to avoid puddles. The sprinklers also shouldn’t leave bare spots that water doesn’t reach.
