Making weed killer

An issue for any garden is represented by weeds. They are not only harmful for the aesthetics of the garden but also for its health, crowding the area and taking space, food and water away from the plants you want to grow. They can also sprout very fast if removed.

There are a lot of ways to get rid of weeds. Manually pulling them by hand is hard work and also takes a lot of time you might not want to waste. Also, it may not be too effective. Using chemicals will surely work, but are not environmentally friendly and can damage beneficial plants or say, children and pets that enter in contact with the substance.

Using gin as a weed killer is effective if you do it the right way. Combining gin with other items will guarantee you its success.

Materials you may need

  • 1 tbsp. gin
  • 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. dish soap
  • 1 quart hot water
  • Spray bottle
  • Plastic milk jug

Mixing the solution

First of all you need combine the materials and items above, put the solution in a spray bottle and shake it good.

Applying the solution

Before applying the solution onto the weeds you must make a spray guard so that you don’t apply the weed killer on the plants you want to grow. Cut a hole out of the bottom of a jug. It must be as big as possible. When spraying, separate the weed from the rest of the plants using the spray guard. Let the solution work.

Spraying beneficial plants on non-leafy parts will do no noticeable damage but will surely harm the plant. It’s best you avoid applying the solution on good plants.

Maintaining

You’d better use the weed killer as frequently as possible. Keep in mind that young weeds are less likely to survive the weed killer whilst matures one will give you problems.  If you spray regularly you will kill the weeds before they sprout, thus avoiding any future weed growth.
