Perfect flowers

Flowers can please anyone’s senses with their colorful petals and pleasant fragrance. There are many flower types that are suitable for different purposes. Some of them are used as decorations for weddings, others for bouquets and floral arrangements, etc.

from a botanically point of view, a plant makes flowers for reproduction purposes. Besides its main parts that are the petals, sepals and the nectar glands, a flower includes also the female ovule or/and the male pollen. Depending on differences and similarities, flowers can be divided in several categories.

Parts of a plant

The main parts of a flower are the sepal, the petals, the stamen, the stigma and the pistil. The petals are the colored parts of the flower that contain the nectar glands and a distinctive perfume. The petals of a flower are called the corolla. The sepals are those green parts that protect the buds. They can be found at the base of a flower and are known as the calyx. The male reproductive part of a flower is called stamen. It is made of a long filament and a pollen sac. The female reproductive part of a flower is called pistil. The pistil looks like a bowling pin and includes several parts like style, stigma and the ovary. At the top of the flower is the stigma, which is connected to the ovary through the style. The style is a long structure resembling a tube. The seeds of a flower appear when the content of the ovary is fertilized.

Bisexual flowers

As their name suggests, bisexual flowers or perfect flowers, include both female and male reproductive parts. The flowers that are called hermaphroditic or androgynous contain both the gynoecium and the androecium. The rose and the lily are the most common bisexual flowers. These flowers do not need insects or birds to pollinate them since they contain both female and male reproductive parts.

Imperfect flowers

As compared to bisexual or perfect flowers, imperfect flowers only one reproductive part, either male or female. The male flowers contain only the stamen or the androecium, while female flowers contain only the gynoecium. Usually, the imperfect flowers have brightly colored petals and attractive smells that attract insects and birds. This way the pollination process takes place and the seeds develop.

Besides the categories, flowers can also be divided in many other classes depending on their features.
