Privacy hedges

Evergreen shrubs are those that don’t shed all their foliage in one go, but instead renews it a bit at a time throughout the year. Some awe with their beautiful flowers, others with their colourful foliage or simply by remaining evergreen. Broad leafed shrubs should be protected from harsh winds.

Flowers are a giveaway when it comes to identifying them, as well as leaves because of their shape size or colour.

Some of the commons landscaping species include yew, arborvitae and juniper.

Yews are hardy and shade tolerant shrubs, with soft needle leaves, often used as borders and hedges. Their soil should be kept well-drained.

Junipers are one of the favorites for privacy hedges or borders because they have sharp spines as protection and they vary in height, while the Arborvitae is preferred because of its height and natural shape, which can be flattened or pyramidal.

If you’re not satisfied with these options you could go for others like pine, spruce and fir. There are even medicinal species, like rosemary, used for strengthening the heart and memory. When planting evergreen shrubs, keep in mind the general growth of the shrub you’re planting, so that you won’t plant two too near each other. They grow about one foot per year and they need pruning to be kept in the shape and height you want, but do so after they’ve bloomed, in case they are flowering shrubs.

There are evergreen shrubs for all types of soils and conditions as well as flowering evergreen shrubs and low growth rate ones – for those who don’t have much space in their garden.
