Slightly acidic soil

Many landscape artists and gardening enthusiasts like to tickle the senses with multicoloured flowers, choosing different species and colour patterns to add to their beautiful collection. Stunning contrasts can be achieved in any season by adding purple or blue flowers to your garden so why not give it a shot, with perhaps the Rhododendron? Its flowers are a deep purple with brown streaks; it should be planted during summer, in a partially shaded patch, fended of harsh winds and in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (you can add mulch to make it easier to maintain moisture levels). Just be careful to water it regularly as it cannot tolerate drought.

Or how about the well-known pansy, an all-seasons, resistant and easy to care for plant? It likes moist, well-drained soil and has a large colour pattern you can choose from. Foxglove is another option, a biennial plant with tubular purple flowers – careful not to ingest them though. It should be planted in sandy loam soil, somewhere partially shaded.

But let’s not forget the Aster Blue Autumn, with purple summer blooms and highly adaptable to any well-drained soil (it requires long daylight for proper growth), and the perennial Delphinium, which though is difficult to grow it’s worth the effort. It needs moist, well-drained soil, neutral to slightly alkaline and it should be kept from harsh winds as it has a fragile stem; feed it organic fertilizers each year and starting the third year you can propagate it by cuttings.

Another purple flowering plant is the Campanula which comes in a variety of forms – dwarf, shrubs or even trees 2 meters in height, annual, biennial or perennial. It needs moist, well-drained soil and partial shade.
The Monkshood thrives in moist, clay soil and in full sunlight during flowering season. Its flowers are hood-shaped and come in different colour patterns but the most popular are the white and the purple varieties.
