Recipe for homemade weed killer

A homemade weed killer made out of ordinary household items is a good way of keeping your lawn weed free and healthy. Using a weed killer is definitely more effective and easier than manually getting rid of the weeds. This homemade weed killer is harmless for children and pets.

Tools and materials

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 large pan
  • 1 tablespoon of dish detergent
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 4 quarts of distilled vinegar

Preparing the distilled vinegar

You need to pour one cup of salt into the vinegar while is mixture is still hot, then stir until the salt has dissolved. After that, pour in a tablespoon of dish detergent and stir it. The detergent will make the weed killer stick to the leaves of the weeds while the salt and vinegar will get rid of them.

Cool and prepare the mixture

After you finished the mixture, let it cool down until it’s at room temperature. Then stir it again and pour it into a spray bottle so you can easily apply it on the weeds.

Effectively using the weed killer

When you spray the weed killer onto the weeds, be careful not to have any plants in the area. If weeds are too close to your plants, soak a piece of cloth in the weed killer and place it on the weeds for a few minutes so that the leaves absorb some of the poison. The weed killer must never saturate the soil because that can lead to the destruction of your beneficial plants, if their roots are in the way.

Storing the weed killer safely

Once you’ve used the weed killer, any remains of the mixture must be safely stored. You need to label the spraying bottle and keep it away from children and pets. This mixture can cause nausea if digested or irritate the skin, but other than that it is harmless and non-toxic.
