Chimney cap dimensions

The chimney cap prevents rainwater and moisture from infiltrating into the chimney and entering the house. It also keeps small animals and birds out. Hiring a professional to do the job can cost you around a few hundred dollars, but attempting to to the job yourself will take you about 2 hours and save you about $150.

Chimney cap type

Depending on the type of chimney cap you choose, it will require a different installing method. You have to choose the one that suits your needs. Be sure to wear gloves and protective goggles when you are installing the cap. The cap will either need to be mounted on or it has an inside mounting system.

Measurements

Exact measurements are crucial when buying the cap. Also, make sure to purchase a spark arrest cap rather than a typical meshed one, because it reduces the chance to occur of a fire.

Installation type 1

In case the chimney has a round flue, all you need to do to install the cap is set it over the flue and screw it in place. Careful not to screw to much or cracks may occur.

Installation type 2

If the chimney has a tile or metal flue, you need to put the cap into the flue until it fits in tightly. After that, seal the gaps and joints with a sealing agent. Sometimes, the sealant is ineffective because the metal heats and ruins the sealant. For a top mount chimney, the cap must be set on the crown and the flange must be moved to align with the crown. Caulk along the flange and insert the flange into the adhesive bed. As an extra safety solution, you could drill some holes in the flange and use screws to tighten the fan.

Last touches

After installing the chimney cap fan, your work is not over. Regular maintenance is needed to keep the chimney safe and effective.
