Materials and tools needed

  • Screwdriver
  • Chisel
  • Mortar
  • Hammer
  • Caulking

Chimney cleaning

First of all you must clean the chimney flue. This way, you will be able to see how damaged the chimney is and you will also avoid being covered in dust and soot when working on the chimney. Any sever damage means that you should probably call a professional and even take the thought of replacing the whole chimney into consideration.

Removing damaged bricks

Use a hammer and chisel to remove the damaged bricks. This task needs to be done standing on the outside of the chimney. Keep any bricks that are in good shape and throw the other ones away.

Bricks replacing

Replace any bricks that you have removed with new ones that match the color of the original chimney. Place a layer of mortar and position the bricks tightly so that gasses will not escape through holes or gaps. After that, place a layer of waterproof caulking to avoid any damage to the chimney done by water.

Finishing touches

Check the brickwork for damaged mortar. If there is any, chip it off and place a new layer, covering it with caulking to prevent it from crumbling down.
