Chimney cement cap

One of the key components of a chimney is the crown. The crown is the portion of the chimney that sticks out of the roof, at the very top. It protects the other important components of the chimney from external factors.

Tools and materials needed

  • Drop Cloth
  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Masonry Cement
  • Pea Gravel
  • Ladder
  • Bonding Agent
  • Trowel
  • Water Sealant

Removing existent crown

First of all you have to remove the existing crown. Lay down drop cloth on the roof to protect it. Using a hammer and chisel, break the crown and put the pieces in a bucket.

Mix the cement

Uniformly mix a bag of pea gravel with dry masonry cement and then add water. Put the new crown into a wheelbarrow and pour the mixture in too. Add water to the mixture every once in a while. Right before the mixture is ready to pour, add a cup of bonding agent and mix.

Cementing

Take some of the cement up on the roof in a bucket. Place it over the chimney using a trowel. When finished, chop off the cement with the trowel.

Crown placement

If the flue sticks out of the chimney 6 inches, the crown must be 4 inches higher than the place where it attaches itself to the flue. If the flue sticks out less, the crown should be 2 inches higher than the flue top. Model the cement into a pyramid, making sure that the flue is the base of the crown. As a finishing touch, waterproof the chimney crown.
