Chimney cowl maintenance
Applying cement on a chimney cap is a good way to prevent things like, rain, animals or debris from entering the chimney. The chimney cap can either be a metal cage or a crown made of cement. Cementing a chimney cap is a relatively easy task.

Chimney preparations
Before you start cementing the chimney cap you have to get rid of any loose mortar that might be in the area. Also, using a brush, you can remove the excess mortar. Check if the chimney is level all the way around and cover the top bricks using membrane flashing.
Framing
Using plastic as a base material, construct a joint that surrounds the flue. This way, the area can dry out easier. Use lumber to construct a frame for the cement. The frame should be higher than the cap you plant on making. The lumber boards must be securely screwed together and also placed on the top of the chimney.
Pour cement
First of all you have to moisten the chimney top using caulk. Then, mix the cement powder and apply inside the frame mold. Make sure the cement is smooth. Leave the cement to dry for 24 hours and then remove the frame. As a finishing touch, waterproof the edges of the chimney cap.
