Chimney

The chimney cap is installed at the top of a chimney to prevent things like rain, debris or even small animals to enter the chimney blocking it or damaging it. The cap also blocks sparks that shoot out of the chimney to ignite anything they fall on like nearby trees, the roof, etc. The chimney cap is not only a great decorative addition to the house but it is also efficient in reducing your heat bills.

A chimney cap can cost even 300 dollars, so making one by yourself is a cost effective solution.

Tools and materials needed

  • Metal sheeting
  • Wire netting
  • Hammer and nails
  • Ban saw
  • Welder
  • Ladder
  • Safety goggles
  • Protective gloves
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil
  • Paper

Measuring

Get on the roof to the area where the chimney sticks out of the roof. Using a measuring tape, measure the dimensions of the chimney, including height, width and length. Be sure to note them down. Be careful when working on the roof.

Get the materials

Go to the hardware store to acquire the materials needed. Be sure to purchase strong wire netting and metal sheeting. The sheeting can be made of aluminum as it is the cheapest material, or you can opt for copper, which looks better but is more costly.

Cut materials

Put on safety gloves and goggles to protect you when working. Cut the metal sheet and wire netting to the right dimensions. Be sure the sheeting and netting are cut somewhat larger than the chimney.

Welding

Create a cube welding the netting and metal sheets together. The metal sheet should act as the cube’s roof, while the netting must be welded as the cube walls.

Attach the cap

Take the chimney cap onto the roof. Attach the wire netting around the chimney so that the metal sheeting acts as the cap for the chimney. Secure everything into place using a hammer and some nails.
