Chimney
To avoid any dangerous situations, when a chimney fire occurs, you must know what to do in order to extinguish it.
Tools and materials needed
- Bucket of sand or baking soda
- 1 Metal container
- A fire extinguisher
- Hose
- Telephone
- Metal tray or lid from an old trash can
- Oven gloves or similar heat-proof protective gloves
Safety
The first thing you must do is evacuate your family and pets from the house. Evaluate the situation and determine if you can solve the issue by yourself.
Put out the fire
Placing sand or baking soda on the fire will deprive it of oxygen and put it off. Keep a bucket of sand next to the fireplace.
Extinguisher
Using an extinguisher to be sure that the fire is completely out. Use it in short bursts and don’t stand too close to the fire.
Cover the fire
After the fire is out, cover the area with a metal sheet. Something like an old oven tray. Be careful around the fireplace, as it will still be hot.
Fire doors
Make sure you close the fire doors after the fire is out to deprive it of oxygen. This will prevent embers from lighting again.
Chimney stack hosing
After you are satisfied with the grate, you can use a hose to spray the chimney. Don’t attempt climbing on the roof.
Emergency services
It’s better to be safe than sorry. Even if you think you have dealt with the problem, you must call the emergency services to come and have a look.
