Condenser

The chimney damper is placed the meeting point of the chimney and the firebox. It is used to keep heat inside while preventing external elements from entering the chimney. It is very important that the damper remains tightly shut.

To avoid the chimney effect, you will have to insulate it. The damper is easier to install then some people think.

Tools and materials needed

  • Chimney damper
  • Protective gloves
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws
  • Silicone sealer
  • Utility knife
  • Special adhesive
  • Caulking gun

Single flue

Slide the chimney damper on top of the flue and secure it in place with a screwdriver and some screws.

Round tile chimney

If the chimney damper has an inside mount orientation, push it down over the flue until it is secured in. Seal the sides with silicone sealer.

Metal chimney

Repeat the same process as for the round tile chimney, but do not seal using silicone. Use adhesive or screws to secure the damper in place. Follow theses steps:

  1. Prepare the damper placing it over the area you want and make sure it is fitted into the outlet.
  2. mark a line near the flange edge. Apply 3/8 inches of adhesive from one end of the flange to the other.
  3. Press the damper down. Use an utility knife to remove any excess adhesive that may be on the sides.

Consult an expert if you are not sure of the installation process.
