Cutting stone tiles

If you want to make curved cuts it usually gets complicated as most tools for cutting stone tiles are very good but only for straight lines. But it’s not as intimidating as it seems – use a wet saw and as long as you take basic precautions you’ll immediately feel comfortable with it.

Read the owner’s manual then set up your wet saw – make sure that the water reservoir is full.

Use a pencil and draw the curves you want on the stones.

Now position the stone on the saw bed with one end of the cut to the saw, turn on the saw and start gently pushing making sure your hands are as far away from the saw as possible. Turn the stone with the other end to the saw and start cutting in the same manner.

Turn the stone so that the curve is perpendicular to the saw and start cutting, from one side of the curve to the other, in small lines – the more lines you cut, the smoother the curve will be when done. Do not forget to turn off the saw once you’ve finished.

You can tap the stone with a hammer to remove any residual material; use a chisel if it’s too big, or if the stone is small enough you can use nippers and make small bites until you’ve removed all the excess. Let the stone dry properly before continuing the project.
