Drain

Water will often infiltrate into your basement and can affect your home’s foundation. The water is probably entering through small cracks and must be pumped out. A sump pump is ideal for this job.

It will take the water out of the basement and drain it somewhere else. You just have to know a few things and follow some simple steps.

Materials and tools you will need

  • Liner for sump pump
  • Sump pump
  • Drill
  • Shovel
  • Caulking gun
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Jackhammer
  • Cement
  • Trowel
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Hack saw

Find the sewer lines

To avoid any damage, know exactly where the sewer lines, pipes etc. are places before cutting and digging holes.

Position the pump

Find the lowest point of your basement using a level. The sump hole must be near a wall that is next to the outside of the building and also near an electrical outlet that has GFCI protection for the sump pump.

Position the discharge pipe

Find a good place to put the discharge pipe. It must lead from the sump pump to the outside of the basement, more precisely, to the place you want to drain the water.

Make the pump hole

Use a sump linear to measure the size of the hole you will need for the pump. Using a jackhammer, bust the concrete and then dig a hole about 24 inches deep that has an even bottom.

Install the liner

Put the linear into the sump hole and seal it with concrete to that there are no gaps between it and the hole. After that use a trowel to make it even with the floor of the basement.

Install the discharge pipe

You need to fit the discharge pipe into the wall. Measure a PVC pipe and cut it to size. Them run it to the discharge pipe which is attached to the sump pump. When you are sure of the lengths, cement the pipes to hold them in place.

Installing the outside pipes

The pipe that comes out of the house from the basement must be at least 6 feet long, away from your foundation, to avoid water going back into the house.

Test the sump pump

Make sure the float valve is adjusted as it should and plug in the machine. Pour 2 -3 buckets of water into the hole of the sump pump is and turn it on. It should work nicely and solve your drainage problems.
