Drip irrigation type

The drip irrigation system is frequently used mostly because it doesn’t waste as much water as other systems. This is because it reduces evaporation levels. It also delivers the water directly to the roots and can be used to fertilize plants.

Begin by connecting the back flow preventer to the main outdoor water source. Screw the hose-bibb connector to the back flow preventer. Next you must connect each of the two hose couplers to the right tubes. One must be attached to the water source and one to the fertilizer supply. Attach a hose to the hose-bibb connector. Unroll the hose and connect it to the ball valve which is attached to the drip tapes. Place the tapes around the roots area of the plants.

Fertilizing

Take off the tubing connector lid and pour fertilizer in the injector tank. Make sure you don’t remove the tubing from the connector nuts. If you are using water soluble fertilizer, pour some water in the tank before pouring the fertilizer. Reposition the lid and connect the tubes back. The tank lid has a flow control. It must be adjusted to regulate the quantity of fertilizer that is delivered to the plants with the water.

Open the tube valves and let the fertilizer mix. Then, pressurize the tank and let the fertilizer flow into the garden. Open the water valve and let it seep through the lines. Regulate  the pressure so that the water and fertilizer reach each plant equally. When the outflow tube lets out clear water, turn the water off because the fertilizer has been successfully delivered.

Irrigating

Open the tank and tubes and clean them by emptying them of water. To convert the system for irrigation, close all the outflow tubes, recap the tank and shut all valves to the off position. Flush the fertilizer injection filter. Do it as often as necessary to avoid stopping the flow.

Tips

  • Fertilizer injectors can’t resist the pressure usual irrigation systems withstand.
  • Use a back flow preventer for the fertilizer injector to prevent water contamination.
