Installing drainage system

Like all drains, their purpose is to divert water from different structures to a safe place. Drain tile systems are a solution for these kind of problems. The system uses pipes to lead the water away from the foundation of any structures.

For this system you will need to dig a trench around the foundation of your home.

Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:

  • Gravel
  • Shovel
  • Hoe
  • Drain title
  • Sealant
  • Filter paper

Measurements

Before you go shopping for materials you need to know the exact measurements. Measure the perimeter  of your home and include elbows and T shapes. Remember that you will need some sealant for the pipes.

Trench

Before digging the trench you need to talk to your local authorities and see if there are any gas pipes, phone lines, etc. You may also need a permission for directing the water in the sewers. Also you may need a sump pump if the drain isn’t installed down the hill. The trench needs to be 18 inches deep and 4 inches wide.

Filter paper

Now, after you have finished digging the trench, you will need to use the filter paper or the landscape fabric and place it on the bottom of the trench. This filter paper will keep soil and sediments away from the trench and clogging it.

Drain tiles

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to place the drain tiles on the filter paper. Use sealant for the joints.

Gravel

The gravel poured in the trench and over it, should be a little large to allow a smooth clear path for the water to flow.

You can also cover the gravel with filtration paper to create a secondary barrier for eliminating clogging from dirt or debris.
