Side chimney flashing

The chimney flashing protects the house roofing from leaks. Detecting any leaks in the roof may mean that the chimney flashing requires repairs.

Tools and materials needed

  • 8 inch Galvanized Flashing
  • Pre-bent Galvanized Step Flashing
  • Tin Snips
  • Hammer
  • Flat Bar
  • Roofing Nails
  • Silicone Caulk
  • Caulk Gun
  1. Loosen the roof shingles 18 inches around of the chimney base.
Take out the nails used to secure them in, but don’t take out the shingles.
  2. Remove the flashing and the nails used to secure the flashing in.
  3. Take off any adhesive and cement from the roof and chimney, in the area where the flashing was.
  4. Cut galvanized steel flashing 10 inches longer than the chimney width, using tin snips. Start mounting the flashing on the lowest part of the chimney, following the roof angle.
  5. Cut the flashing 5 inches from the edge. Make sure not to cut the bottom flashing.
  6. Mount the chimney flashing starter strip around the chimney. Bend the flashing around the edges and nail it to the chimney.
  7. Put the shingles back over the flashing. The shingles must be smooth upwards to leak-proof the roof.
  8. The step flashing must be installed on the sides of the roof. The shingles must overlap the flashing. The chimney flashing mustn’t be visible under the shingles. It must be nailed directly to the chimney, not to the roof.
  9. To install the top edge flashing, you must do the same operation as with the starter strip. The flashing must be cut halfway from top to bottom. Nail the flashing to the chimney.
  10. Seal the shingles and any uncovered piece of flashing with silicone caulking.
