Weed killer

Making your own homemade herbicide using only household items is simple and environmentally friendly. This type of herbicide will keep your garden healthy and neat.

Vinegar herbicide

Vinegar based herbicide is the most commonly used homemade weed killer.

Any type of vinegar will do the job. For 1/2 cup of herbicide you will need:

  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • ¼ cup table salt
  • ¼ cup dish soap

All you have to do is mix the ingredients, pour them into a spray bottle and apply the solution on the weeds. Each ingredient does a separate job. The vinegar kills the weeds, salt prevents it from sprouting again and soup makes the solution stick to the plant. There’s also another recipe that contains vinegar but also gin.

  • 1 oz. gin
  • 1 oz. dish soap
  • 1 oz. vinegar

Vinegar based herbicides are non-selective and will kill any plants from weeds to vegetables. Be careful when applying the solution because any breeze, wind, mist or rain, may spread the solution to plants you didn’t want affected.

Other possibilities

Using boiled water is another simple way of getting rid of weeds. Even professional gardeners use this technique. All you have to do is boil the amount of water you think you need and after that simply apply it on the weeds you want to kill. This method is not only safe and good for the environment, but it is also safe for your kids and pets that might come in contact with that area. Essentially, the weeds will turn black and die, because they were boiled to death.

Salt is often used as a weed killer. A technique used when trying to keep driveway seems clear of plants is putting a line of salt rock along the seam. This way, any plant that comes in contact with the salt, dies. Be careful not to use too much salt, because it can make the soil in that area toxic and prohibit any future plant growth in the area. Also, rainwater can spread the salt across the soil, making the area even bigger.

Homemade herbicides are surely efficient and much cheaper than commercial weed killers.
