Alternative drainage ditch
It is important for any homeowner to know what to do when the drainage system has problems.
Examine and solve the problems
First of all you must find out what’s the problem with your drainage system. It might be only a clogged gutter or drain that can be simply cleaned.
Drainage ditch solutions
When digging a drainage ditch keep in mind that the end of the ditch must always be at the lowest area of your property, whilst the area where water accumulates the most must be top of your property. If the ditch is low in the middle it will be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is best you dig it in such a way to avoid this.
Consider an alternative to a ditch
If you refuse to have a ditch on your lawn, consider filling it with gravel and laying cloth or screen over it to delay the growth of roots. Roots will eventually appear and will slow down the water flow.
Pipes can be a solution
Instead of filling your ditch with gravel you can choose to put pipes in it. Avoid thin-walled pipes because they will not last long and are not as efficient.
Drainage maintenance
In time, your ditch might not work as well as it did in the beginning. Consider digging a second ditch near the first one. This second ditch will require a different path due to land erosion.
