Chimney insulation
The task of installing a chimney flue liner is a relatively easy one. All you need to do is follow the instructions that come with the liner kit.
Tools and materials needed
- Liner
- Insulation
- Ladder
- Wrench
- Measuring tape
- Tin snips or metal saw
- Spray adhesive
- Foil tape
- Rope
- At least one helper
Unpacking
Place the liner on the ground and straighten it.
Measuring and cutting
Measure the liner from the bottom of the termination to the top. To those measurements add an extra foot and cut the liner to that size. Make sure not to leave any rough or sharp edges.
Liner insulation
Cut the insulation to size the liner. The insulation must overlap the liner by at least an inch. Measure the diameter of the liner and multiply the result by 3.14 then add one inch for the overlap. That will be the estimated width. It is not recommended overlapping more than one inch of insulation over the liner
Liner mesh
Use hose clamps to wrap the liner in wire mesh. This also includes the bottom connector. The mesh must tightly fit the liner. Cut off any surplus wire mesh. It will protect the liner and the insulation from damage.
Liner installation
Attach a rope to the bottom connector. Have someone pull the rope down the chimney while you guide the liner from the top. When the liner is properly positioned, cut off any surplus liner at the top. Leave 4 inches for the crown.
Chimney cap installation
Apply some caulk on the clay flue tile or chimney crown. Place the top place onto the liner and press it down on the caulk. Use the clamp to tighten the cap around the liner and secure it to the top plate.
Bottom connections
Attach the bottom connector of the liner to the appliance.
