Chimney byproducts
The chimney flashing is important because it doesn’t let water infiltrate into the house. Often inspections of the flashing for any leaks, gaps or damage will help you keep your home water safe. To fix most flashing related problems, you just have to use a sealant.
Tools and Materials
- Reinforcement fabric
- Flashing sealant and brush
- Small broom
- Duct tape
- Scissors or cutter
Cleaning
Before applying the sealant it is important to assure a clean working environment. Sweep the place that needs sealant and get rid of any debris that might be lying around.
Cutting fabric
The reinforcement fabric must be 3 inches longer in each way than the flashing, so that it can be wrapped around the chimney sides.
Masking the roof
Using duct tape, mask an area of the roof and the chimney, careful to leave a distance of at least 1 inch between the duct tape and the fabric.
Base coating
Lay a 1/8 inch thick base coat of sealing on the area. Remain in the masked part of the roof.
Sealing
You have to embed the fabric in the base coat. When finished, lay some sealant again, thus covering the fabric. Wrap the fabric around the chimney and repeat the process until the task is done.
When working on the top side, the process is the same as above. You just have to cut the fabric several inches longer. Take the duct tape off the roof and chimney when finished.
