The connection between air conditioners and room sizes
When buying an air conditioner you must be aware of the size of the rooms in which you will install it. If it will too big, it will consume extra energy and will work poorly. A small unit for a large room won’t keep up with the comfort needs and will strain.
So, before making the choice, measure the room or rooms. You need to find out the square footage (multiply the length with the width) and match it with information found on the packing, called BTU rating.
BTU rating is short for British Thermal Units and it tells how much heat the apparatus can draw from the room where it’s installed.
Here are some examples of BTU numbers that will give you an idea of the size of them:
– The small air conditioners have 5000 to 7000 BTUs per hour and can work well in an area with 100 to 300 square feet.
– The medium sized devices operate at 8000 to 10.000 BTUs and cover a room of approximately 450 square feet.
– Large air conditioners run at 10.000 – 12.500 BTUs per hour and will cool a space with 400 – 650 square feet.

Buying a portable air conditioner is a good way to go, but choose the one with a stronger unit than the space requires. This type of devices isn’t as powerful as window air conditioners.
