Chimney crown installation
A chimney crown is a very important device that is placed on the top of the chimney. It helps shed water and seals off the top of the chimney. A faulty chimney crown leads to improper chimney functionality and failure.
Chimney liner inspection
Chimney liners mustn’t be worn out as this can represent a very dangerous perspective. Burning embers can shoot out the chimney and cause fire hazards.
Warranty
Choose a chimney crown that comes with a warranty. A stainless steel or a copper crown will come with a lifetime warranty.
Material
Avoid using cheap materials for the chimney crown, because it will increase the chance of a fire hazard.
Animal entry
Make sure the chimney crown is strong enough to prevent any animal from entering the chimney. The crown should also have a heavy duty mesh to keep out anything that tries to get it.
Water
Keep water out of the flue. Use multiple flues if needed. The chimney must withstand any weather.
Draft
The chimney crown mustn’t affect the chimney draft. If there’s a 5 inch or more clearance between the crown and flue and the draft will not be affected.
Embers
Use a 3/4 inch sized mesh to keep embers from shooting out of the chimney and igniting the roof. A smaller mesh can freeze up during winter and block the chimney.
Winds
Take extra measures in order to be sure that any strong winds won’t affect the chimney crown at the top of the chimney.
